At 1500hrs on 28th May 2014 Spanish border controls at the Gibraltar-Spain frontier saw over one hour delays imposed on pedestrians. The restrictions were placed at a time when school children and tourist were crossing. At approximately 1630hrs the same restrictions were eased.

At 1500hrs on 28th May 2014 Spanish border controls at the Gibraltar-Spain frontier saw the queues extend all the way to the airport forecourt. At the same time vehicular passage saw only a 30 minute delay at the most. Children were caught up in the delays.

From a few people to an over 120m long mass of people was seen to be created by the enforced delays. As people waited to cross into Spain the area between the Policia Nacional officer and the Customs area at the Spanish side of the border was seen to be clear.

In less than five minutes a free flowing pedestrain zone saw queues increased by effecting a total stop of all persons crossing for nearly 15 minutes. This led to queues forming on the Gibraltar side extending into the airport forecourt within minutes.

Schoolchildren and parents were made to wait to cross the road on the Gibraltar side over 20-30 minutes at a time as Spanish border controls forced the authorities in Gibraltar to implement traffic controls. The delays were caused by The Policia Nacional holding pedestrian back from crossing to their Customs zone.

The concert was held at the Victoria Stadium using the same stages and facilities used the day earlier by the Gibraltar Music Festival.Evacuation Commemoration Day was officially introduced earlier this year after Gibraltar celebrated 75 years since the whole of the Gibraltar population was evacuated during the second World War. Many of the Gibraltarians were taken to London where some died during the London blitz. Whilst most stayed in London, others were taken to Northern Ireland, Madiera and Jamacia. It was only a confrontation between population leaders that Gibraltarians were allowed back on the Rock after British officials had initially refused to return the population back to its rightful home.
