Asunto: Pesca ilegal del atún en el Estrecho de Gibraltar
Como sabe la Comisión, el Estrecho de Gibraltar y, en concreto, la Bahía de Cádiz, es una zona donde se realiza la pesca del atún, principalmente por medio de un arte tradicional, milenario y sostenible, como es la almadraba.
Desafortunadamente, desde hace algún tiempo se están produciendo episodios de pesca ilegal, camuflada como pesca recreativa, con destino final en el mercado. Todo ello con el agravante de que los presuntos infractores, según denuncian las organizaciones ecologistas, encuentran refugio en las costas del Peñón de Gibraltar,
¿Tiene la Comisión conocimiento de estas prácticas ilegales?
¿Qué medidas está aplicando la Comisión para atajar dichas prácticas?

La Comisión toma nota de la información que facilita en su pregunta en relación, en particular, con las posibles infracciones cometidas en el ámbito de la pesca recreativa en la zona del Estrecho de Gibraltar.
El seguimiento y control de las actividades pesqueras relacionadas con el atún rojo constituyen una prioridad esencial para la Unión Europea. En 2015, como en años anteriores, un plan de despliegue conjunto reunirá a representantes de la Comisión Europea, los Estados miembros y la Agencia Europea de Control de la Pesca y utilizará los recursos de control de los ocho Estados miembros de la UE que participan en la pesca del atún rojo. Este plan incluye una serie de criterios que han de aplicarse en los controles específicos que las autoridades de control competentes de los Estados miembros efectúen en relación con la pesca deportiva y recreativa.
Si en estos controles se observan casos de incumplimiento, por parte de operadores de la UE o de fuera de la UE, tales casos serán examinados por las autoridades pertinentes y, si fuera necesario, por la Comisión Internacional para la Conservación del Atún Atlántico, que es la organización regional de pesca competente para establecer medidas de gestión de la población de esa pesquería.
Entretanto, la Comisión prestará especial atención a la aplicación de las normas relativas a la pesca recreativa de atún rojo.

Subject: Illegal tuna fishing in the Strait of Gibraltar
As the Commission knows, the Strait of Gibraltar, and in particular the Bay of Cadiz, is a zone where tuna fish are caught, mainly by means of an ancient, traditional and sustainable method, namely the ‘almadraba’ [tuna trap].
Unfortunately, for some time now incidents have been occurring of illegal fishing camouflaged as recreational fishing but with the fish destined for the market. The situation is made worse by the fact that, according to environmental bodies, the alleged perpetrators find refuge on the coast of the Rock of Gibraltar.
Is the Commission aware of these illegal practices?
What steps is the Commission taking to stop these practices?

The Commission takes note of the information provided in your question regarding in particular possible infringements by recreational fisheries in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar.
The monitoring and control of fishing activities related to the bluefin tuna is a high priority for the European Union. In 2015, as in previous years, a Joint Deployment Plan will bring together the European Commission, Member States and the European Fisheries Control Agency and will draw on the control resources of the eight EU Member States involved in the Bluefin tuna fishery. This plan includes benchmark requirements for specific controls by the competent control authorities in the Member States of the sports and recreational fishery.
Should these controls reveal cases of non-compliance by EU or non-EU operators, these cases will be subject to review by the relevant authorities and if necessary by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic tuna which is the regional fisheries organisation competent for establishing management measures for this stock.
In the meantime, the Commission will pay particular attention to the application of the rules regarding the bluefin tuna recreational fishery.
