Question 16 October 2014 Ashley Fox (ECR-Con)
Subject: Gibraltar border delays
Is the Commission aware that the delays experienced by EU nationals and others in vehicles exiting Spain and entering Gibraltar peaked at 120 minutes on 29 August 2014, 120 minutes on 27 August 2014, 95 minutes on 25 August 2014 and 90 minutes on 14 August 2014, owing to the intensity of the exit checks conducted by the Spanish authorities?
Does the Commission regard the checks undertaken by Spain to be reasonable and proportionate?
Answer 16 December 2014 Commissioner Avramopoulos
The Commission is regularly informed about the situation at the SpanishGibraltar border, including on delays reported by citizens upon entry or exit to Spain.
On 30 July 2014 the Commission addressed requests for additional measures to both Spain and the United Kingdom to be implemented without delay in order to reduce the waiting time. One of the important measures requested from Spain is to optimise the riskbased profiling and to adapt the checks accordingly. The Commission recently received the reply from Spain. It will proceed to its analysis before assessing the situation at this border again.
